Welcome to Our Research and Education Collective

A Message to All Interns, Scholars, and Collaborators

Dear Members of Our Growing Learning Community,

You have been invited into a vibrant and intentional collective—made up of three distinct yet harmonized groups, each bringing forward a different kind of brilliance, curiosity, and contribution.

Each of you belongs to one of three groups:

• The Heart Spark Research Internship Program

• The Future Physician Scholars Research Prep Program

• The Brown Virtual Lab

While your paths are unique, your presence in this collective is shared. Each of you is essential to the rhythm, rigor, and reflective spirit of our shared mission.

Let us introduce the group we now form together.

First Group: The Research Interns

This group is composed of undergraduate students, post-baccalaureate trainees, and early-career professionals.

They are thinkers in motion, actively participating in health-related research projects while learning the art of reflection, documentation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

These individuals are:

• Engaged in structured internships

• Assigned to real projects with guided mentorship

• Participating in weekly reflections, onboarding, and deliverables

They are the engine of experimentation—learning by doing, questioning deeply, and working with rigor.

They represent the Heart Spark Research Internship Program.

Second Group: The Future Physician Scholars

These are the early explorers—high school and early undergraduate students with a spark of interest in medicine and scientific discovery.

They are in preparation, learning not only what to study, but how to reflect, grow, and build toward futures in health, science, and service.

These scholars are:

• Participating in a structured academic preparation program

• Guided by seasoned mentors who cultivate reflection and purpose

• Gaining exposure to research, clinical pathways, and professional identity formation

They represent the Future Physician Scholars Research Prep Program—young visionaries being prepared for journeys of deep impact.

Third Group: The Lab Contributors

These participants are a diverse array of contributors—advanced students, early professionals, academic collaborators—who are actively engaged in research mentorship or intellectual collaboration.

They are:

• Members of the Brown Virtual Lab

• Invited to contribute to research thought work, scholarly output, or reflection circles

• Aligned not by title or stage, but by depth of engagement and commitment to rigor

These individuals work in dialogue with the mission. Their contributions are guided, focused, and often cross-cutting across research areas.

You Are a Collective

Though you are seated in three different rows, you are not isolated.

You are not alone.

You are part of a collective architecture that values:

• Rigor and clarity

• Identity and reflection

• Mentorship and exploration

• Contribution and care

The person next to you may not have your same title. They may not share your project, your goal, or your educational level. But they are here, too—for the same reason you are:

To grow.

To listen.

To discover.

To lead.

We welcome you as you are—

In your row,

On your path,

With your spark.

Together, we learn.

Together, we reflect.

Together, we rise.

With anticipation and respect,

Dr. Sherry-Ann Brown
