Hello
My name is Ava Brey, and I am a MCW- Green Bay student. I am currently in my first year, and I am interested in pursuing a career in cardiology. I attended the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire for my undergraduate, and my major was in Psychology. My previous work in research was in a human research lab looking into alcohol use disorder and how stress may increase the amount of alcohol poured in our subjects. My interest in cardiology began when I started working at Mayo Clinic as a Telemetry Technician. I found it incredibly interesting that the electrical pathway of the heart could reveal so many things about our patients in a non-invasive way. I have my Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician certificate, and I very much enjoy reading ECGs. I worked at Mayo Clinic for a year before moving back to Green Bay, Wisconsin where I worked in the ICU as a telemetry technician at Bellin Health. Currently, I am involved in leadership role at the free psychiatric clinic in Green Bay, WI., where I help schedule patients, meet with patients, and present to my attending. I chose this lab because it combined two of my largest interests: cardiology and oncology. I find both specialties incredibly fascinating, and I was ecstatic to learn that there is a lab where I can explore both. I believe that as medical students, it is important that we contribute to bettering our patient populations and the best way we can do that is through research. Research supplies us tools to better provide for our patients, and I think it is important that as medical professionals that we also help broaden the current research in healthcare. Some unique contributions I have is that I can interpret ECG rhythms. I find it enjoyable to have a difficult rhythm to try to interpret, and I like to describe it as a "puzzle" to try to solve. Additionally, I have worked in human research before in my previous lab in undergrad, so I believe those skills will carry over well. I consider myself laid back in group settings, and I get along easily with others. I think communication is essential to proper group interactions, so I try to check my email multiple times a day and ensure my communication is effective.
